Introducing The New HTC One Series
The HTC One series is the brand new range of smartphones unveiled by HTC during February’s Mobile World Congress (MWC). This new range features three models: the One X, the One S and the One V, all using Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS and positioned at different segments of the market. After losing out to Samsung as the king of Android-based smartphones, HTC is pinning its hopes on the One series regaining its title.

HTC’s slogan is “quietly brilliant”, and the innovative little touches it has brought to smartphone design over the years have become standard across most manufacturers. Where HTC led others followed. However over the last 12 months, the company has found itself lagging behind as Samsung’s larger, higher definition screen and 8-megapixel camera in the Galaxy S II dominated the Android market.
The One X is the leading model in this new range and features some pretty impressive specs. A 1.5GHz quad-core processor powers a 4.7-inch 720p HD touchscreen and 8MP camera, which has been super-charged to work in less than a second and autofocus in 0.2 seconds.
HTC is also taking full advantage of its collaboration with Beats by Dr Dre by integrating it throughout the One series. The Beats brand has become hugely popular due to its enhanced sound quality and this link-up gives HTC a real advantage in the hugely competitive mobile phone market.
Despite it being at the higher-end of the market, there are some good HTC One X deals to be had. If you use Mobilesplease to compare mobile phones, you can pick up a free One X on a 24-month contract for less than £30 a month.
Positioned as a mid-range handset, HTC is pushing the quality of the camera on the One S as its key selling point. It has a sleek 7.8mm body with 4.3-inch display that incorporates HTC ImageSense technology, which means that it delivers ‘brilliantly detailed photos.’ Interesting features include auto smile detection and face focus as well as the ability to take photographs while you’re shooting a video.
Similar to the X, the One S has Beats Audio and also Dropbox integration, with 25GB free storage for 12 months. This means that you can save, send and share large files on the go without having to block up your e-mail client. HTC has also enabled access to Dropbox from the Polaris Office app, which enables you to edit documents and save them automatically.
As a mid-range handset, there are some extremely competitive HTC One S deals to be had from Mobilesplease, which include a free handset, unlimited text messages, 500MB data and 300 minutes for less than £25 a month.
At the lower-end of the market, HTC is releasing the One V, which they’re referring to as the ‘essential’ smartphone and which we can assume is their description of an entry-level handset. It has the smallest screen of the One Series, at 3.7-inches and featuring a 1 GHz processor, it’s also got less power than the other two. Design-wise, it resembles the Hero, which is no bad thing and with Beats Audio integration and a 5MP camera, this has the kind of spec that could position the phone as the entry-level smartphone of choice.
Mobilesplease currently has free HTC One V deals for £11 a month, which includes 300 minutes and unlimited text messages over a 24-month contract.
With HTC reporting a 26% fall in revenue for the last quarter of 2011 and a further fall in the first quarter of 2012, expect to see this range as something of a make-or-break launch. With three distinct handsets, all positioned intelligently at different levels of the market, they’ve given themselves every chance to put the pressure on Samsung to retain its title as the leading manufacturer of Android handsets.
